So recently i when i went to hdrlabs.com the community site for the HDRI handbook i saw this video posted on the website. It's about 50 minutes long and it's a little dry. Compound that with the fact that i only understood about 10-15% of it you can consider this a must watch! holy shit is this guy amazing! If you can spare the time please watch this you wont be disapointed!

Another day another dollar (spent! lol)

It’s that time again! New post! Lately I have been busy working on my senior 2 project (http://studio2.crazy8studio.com here at Savannah college of art and design but I have found some time to do some experimenting.  First things first, I was followed a tutorial on djx’s blog site (http://www.djx.com.au/blog/category/tutorials/page/2/) and found out just how powerful mental ray phsycial light is! It was a lot of fun to work with and I will be using it more in the future!

Next we move on to Maxwell…. Wow is this an awesome renderer! I have only been able to play with it for about 20 minutes but from those 20 minutes I was blown away. I can’t wait to play with it more! The fact that it has the options built right into the render settings to plug in different maps for you IBL is just wicked! Mental Ray definitely needs that! Below is sadly not a great render (what do you expect for 20min with a new software?) out of Maxwell but it is a cool robot! It is from a project I am working on with Aldrich Torres( www.aldrichtorres.com ) and Bumjoon. BumJoon is the modeler, rigger and animator to be credited here. As for Al and I, we are on board for everything else that goes into bringing Cg into live action!

Finally we get to the tutorial I just wrote for my presentation to the Digital Media Club on Wednesday April 2, 2008.  The tutorial is a follow up the lecture I gave the quarter before on the practical application of photography with HDRI. This lecture goes about explaining how to properly implement HDRI into Mental Ray for Maya and then once setup how to break your render down into render passes. Specifically I focused on the primary passes: Diffuse, Specular, Shadow, and Reflection. The document isn’t completely done but I do have it available for download here. Also you can download the project files that I used in the tutorial here. Finally here are the notes from my previous lecture last quarter on the practical application of photography with HDRI.

Until next time!

Status Update

So it's been a little while since my last update... hope you all enjoyed those links i posted

I finally have some time to post some stuff after just getting back from my spring break trip with my roommates. We decided to go to back to my roommates TJ house for spring break and since he lives outside of NYC we spent time in the city. It was a blast! The MET is amazing the MOMA (engh) and everything else awesome. You can see the photo's from our trip (I took some real good ones for a 2 1/2 D matte painting) http://cz8s.com/lightroom/nyc/ .

Last quarter was brutal! Bridget is an awesome professor but she demands a lot of work from you. The final project in that class I decided to focus on HDRI and Mental Ray though I didn't get as much time as i would have liked to  explore I did learn how break down in render passes. I will be giving a lecture to the DMC and posting a tutorial on my site how to do render passes with HDRI. Here is a link to my final project for that class ( the car is a Saleen S7 and was modeled by Frank Van Es http://www.frankvanesfx.nl)

Project 4 (right click and save) 300mb

Finally I finished my Studio 1 project which I call drink bot. You can see the development blog plus a break down on the render passes at http://studio1.cz8s.com but here is a link to the final movie

Drinkbot (right click and save) 70mb

I will be posting that tutorial soon and hopefully some more HDR environments. Lastly I will leave you with a little tip that I learned last quarter. If you’re trying to save out floating point images such as openEXR through mental ray. Make sure in your MR render global’s that you expand the frame buffer tab and change the data set from 8bit integer to 32bit floating point or else all your doing is increasing your file sizes but not getting the extra information from floating point images.
